blackberry, hazelnut and blue cheese crepe

I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich. And I’d have to wrack my brain even harder to think of someone who wouldn’t like a similar sandwich with the peanut butter swapped out for an amazing hazelnut butter. Now imagine that a blackberry jam and hazelnut butter blend is served not as a sandwich, but in a fresh crepe sprinkled with powdered sugar and a dollop of whipped cream. Sounds good so far, right? To top it all off, there’s a third filling that at first might sound a bit odd, but is anything but - blue cheese.

Four Sisters started featuring this crepe on Valentine’s day, and I knew I wanted to give it a shot. I wasn’t sure what to expect, honestly - adding blue cheese to such a sweet crepe could easily ruin an already delightful sounding combination. Too much blue cheese, and it could end up causing some serious flavor dissonance. Too little and it would just seem like a gimmick. To say that they managed to find some sort of golden ratio of three ingredients that could easily have ended up utterly clashing is saying too little.

The balance of the blackberry and hazelnut was tempered and prevented from going too far into the overly-sweet zone by adding just the right amount of blue cheese. It gave a slightly salty, smooth aftertaste to the dish that rounded it off perfectly. I sometimes get overwhelmed by the flavor of hazelnut, which was the initial thing I tasted when I took a bite, but their hazelnut butter was far less chocolaty than something like Nutella. It definitely had a powerful taste, but nothing like the coated mouth sensation I get from other hazelnut products.

After finishing, I was thinking about what it would have tasted like without the blue cheese in it, just to get an idea of what was added. Take it away, and you would be left with an excellent blend of blackberry and hazelnut, but it would just be another sweet crepe. Add the blue cheese in just the right quantity and you have something unique and outstanding. I tend to go for their savory offerings when I’m at Four Sisters, but this one might have me converted.
