The 2010 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships wrapped up over the weekend in the Louisville area.
Friday was the final day of road racing at Cherokee Park, then the competition crossed the Ohio River for the final two days with the criteriums (closed-course racing) in Jeffersonville, Ind.
Although no Louisville-area cyclist claimed a national title over the weekend, a few definitely came close, including Curtis Tolson and Brad Swope.
On Friday national champions were crowned in three men's divisions on the final day of road racing at Cherokee Park. Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala./TriStar Cycling Team) won the 35-39 age group, while Roger Aspholm (Haworth, NJ/Westwood Velo) won 40-44 and Cale Reeder (Cameron Park, Calif./Echelon Gran Fondo).
On Saturday, the first day of criterium racing, eight riders - six women and two men - won national titles on the four-corner course in downtown Jeffersonville, Ind.
On the women's side Julie Jerue (Lakeland, Fla./Outspokin Bicycles) won 30-34, while Louisville's Kelly Kowalczyk (Rogue Racing Project) was third.
Linda Sone (Northfield, Minn./Minneapolis Bicycle Racing Club) won 35-39, while Jane Evely (Kent, Ohio/Team Summa) captured 40-44. Terri Clouse (Monument, Colo./ColoBikeLaw.com) won 45-49, while Louisville's Tracy Tolson (Kentucky Flyers) finished third.
Christine Schryver (Rochester, NY/Genesse Valley Cycling) captured 50-54, while Ann Marie Miller (New York, NY/Century Road Club Association) won 55-59.
On the men's side, David Henderson (Columbia, Mo./Columbia Bike Club) won 40-44, while James Paolinetti (Los Angeles, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite) edged Louisville's Curtis Tolson (Kentucky Flyers) in 45-49.
Sunday 11 more national championships were claimed on the course along Market, Walnut and Spring streets, as well as Riverside Dr.
On the women's side, Kathleen Corbett (Glenview, Ill./Midwest Opens Cycling Team) won 60-64 while Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./Northeast Bicycle Club) won 65-69.
On the men's side, Adam Bergman (Lino Lakes, Minn./Kentucky Flyers Cycling) won 30-34 and Chris DeMarchi (Chino, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite) captured 35-39, while Louisville's Brian Baker (Kentucky Flyers) finished fourth.
In the other men's races Gerald Finken (La Crosse, Wis./St. Paul Bicycle Racing Club) won 50-54, while Charles Townsend (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Paul Bicycle Racing Club). In 60-64 Kenny Fuller (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Cycles Veloce) captured his 41st national title by out-sprinting Louisville's Swope (Sonovelo) to the finish.
Meanwhile, Richard Shields (Fremont, Calif./Team Hammer Nutrition) won 65-69, John Auer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Somerset Wheelmen) captured 70-74, Frederic Schmid (Waco, Texas/Bicycles Outback) took 75-79 and Link Lindquist (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Team Velosport) won the 80+ age group.

The nationals won't be back in the Louisville area next year, though, they'll be in Bend, Oregon.
