LouLoops, a cycling app to launch in the next couple months, provides a resource for cyclists and Louisville metro government while also motivating citizens to go the extra mile. Forest Giant Inc. and Urban Design Studio are collaborating on the new mobile app as a result of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Prototype Fund.

Forest Giant, a local technology firm, and Urban Design Studio, who works for better design practices for the city and community, were awarded the $35,000 grant from the Knight Foundation in January. The Knight Foundation is dedicated to “quality journalism, advance media innovation, (and)..the arts,” according to their website.
“With LouLoops we will help make bicycling safer and more fun, while providing actionable data to local planning officials,” according to the Knight Foundation entry form.
The city plans to use the app to collect valuable data from cyclists. This data is then analyzed for where people are biking, how they are riding, and cyclists’ comments on road maintenance. The metro government hopes to turn this data into action in efforts to improve road routes, safety and cycling infrastructure within the city.
