Do you occasionally catch Junior singing in the shower? Does your little girl give you a backseat serenade during road trips? Have old episodes of Glee been sitting in your DVR for over a year? If so, you may have a blossoming songbird on your hands. Luckily, the Louisville Youth Choir (LYC) offers parents an excellent opportunity to foster their child's passion for singing. The organization is currently accepting applications for its 10-week Primary Singers Program, open to children in first, second, and third grades.
“LYC strives to meet unmet artistic needs in our community. A choir for this age level assures that even the youngest singers have the opportunity to explore vocal music. The vast majority of schools are not able to afford this opportunity to elementary age singers—we are fortunate that we can,” says Terri E. Foster, artistic/executive director of The Louisville Youth Choir.
The LYC has a diverse repertoire, ranging from major classics to more modern pieces of music. Their goal is a simple one -- to enhance musical education and performance experiences for youth. The organization is comprised of over 100 singers from more than 60 schools throughout the region. Personally, some of my fondest childhood memories were made in during 5th period chorus class. I would've been ecstatic if something like LYC was around where I grew up! They truly take chorus class to a whole new level.
Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 5:15 - 6:15 p.m. and will run from October 9 - December 14. The choir is housed at Sacred Heart School for the Arts, 3105 Lexington Road, on the Ursuline Campus. Primary Singers rehearsals will be held in Angela Hall, building 17. At the end of rehearsals, the choir will showcase their skills with a performance at the annual Christmas Festival concert on December 14.
Since a solo audition can be frightening at any age, let alone such a young one, there are no auditions required for the Primary Singers Program (insert sigh of relief). Little singers must be able to read text, though (ability to read music is not required). So, if your child can read and sing, come join the fun!
