One of the most lasting family Christmas traditions is taking your children to The Nutcracker. Children love watching dancers on stage, but many ballets are long with unrelatable storylines. The appeal of a holiday performance of The Nutcracker—for children, at least—is the familiar, festive music, the children featured in the cast, and of course, the subject itself: a magical Christmas gift that transports little Clara into a land of snowflakes, fairies, and sweets.
The Louisville Ballet's annual performance of The Nutcracker begins this weekend. It's always a hit. If you (or your children's grandparents) can swing the $30+ tickets, go for it. But if you still want to enjoy this timeless story without spending loads of cash, buy tickets for one of Sacred Heart School for the Arts’ performances this weekend.
Dancers from the SHSA as well as other young local ballerinas will fill the stage at the Ursuline Arts Center this weekend. Tickets are $5 for students or seniors and $8 for adults and can be ordered at the box office or at www.showtixforu.com. That's a terrific price to pay to experience the ballet with your children and let them watch dancers close to their own age perform the roles of Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Nutcracker Prince, and all the mice, soldiers, party girls, polichinelles, angels, and cooks. (Disclaimer: If you go, look for the tiniest of all the cooks. That's my five year-old!)
Performances are Friday, December 7 at 7:00 pm; Saturday, December 8 at 2:00 pm; and Sunday, December 9 at 2:00 pm. All performances are at the Ursuline Arts Center at 3114 Lexington Road.
