I've been very fortunate in my life, but last night's show ranks pretty high on my list of awesome, a list obviously far greater than most. Granted I haven't been married or had children or done some of the things that are 'stereotypical' influencers on the happiness of most, but music has carried me to some magical places, literally and figuratively. The place it took me last night was one of majestic greatness as Jeff Tweedy delivered a set full of awesome from start to finish.
You've really got to hand it to Tweedy. He epitomizes the 'singer/songwriter' and owns it with remarkable candor and humbleness. The first thing that comes to mind is a random comparison to Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, numbskulls) and how he owns rock n' roll badassery on a whole other level than most, although perhaps not quite as humble, yet with plenty of candor. It's honest, it's in your face, you know what you're going to get, and you'll keep coming back for more as long as you can. That slightly does justice to the feeling that I and everyone I spoke to got last night in splendid fashion.
The new songs were great, arrangements tight, pitches had some range, and the man crushed some Wilco favorites, solo acoustic, towards the end. As my thousands of fans know, I've been quite fortunate to catch some truly amazing shows this year, and last night is truly up there. For your soul, you should try and get in on this show and all things Tweedy in the future. Huge thanks to the folks at Tony Margherita Management, The Brown Theatre, Production Simple, and WFPK for such an astounding evening. It was really great seeing some old/new friends make it out as well. In me you trust, xoxo.
