Irish ABCs: Local author, Viki Pidgeon, presents an unconventional Irish history

Although my biological ethnic heritage is – shall we say – “exotic” in its myriad of mixes: a dash of German, a pop of Spanish, some sprinklings of Eastern Europe, a nice solid slice of Cherokee for good measure, as well as some other miscellaneous genetic contributions, are all swirling in harmonious synergy through my veins, once a year I proudly celebrate my .04567% Irish birthright.  This has much to do with the fact that on this upcoming annual demi-holiday, my first name is cried collectively into the night by many a lovable and happy Irish-American (and/or drunken college kid): “Erin Go Bragh!”  Ireland forever.  The sweet term of endearment bestowed on the Emerald Isle by its loyal countrymen is my given name; the country practically belongs to me exclusively.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (my day) a week early, good friends!  Ireland aficionado and author, Viki Pidgeon, brings her newest book, I is for Ireland: An Alphabetical Tour, to Carmichael’s Bookstore tomorrow, Saturday, March 10th, at 4pm.  An award-winning blend of a the familiar ABC reader and an array of history, Pidgeon’s I is for Ireland is a whimsical – and informative – look at the Irish heritage, its land, people and culture for the youngest Ireland enthusiasts.  Including large, vivid illustrations, a quiz and fact tidbits such as T for the much beloved thatched roof cottages of the countryside and Q representing Queenstown – the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic – I is for Ireland is not your typical dusty history tome.

The mind behind the mixture, Viki Pidgeon, has authored two previous books focusing on Irish cookery, including, Ireland’s Comfort Foods & Touring Attractions.  A true lover of the Celtic tradition, Pidgeon and her husband both hold dual citizenships in America and Ireland and seek to bring their loyalty and love of the Emerald Isle to the Bluegrass (Guinness is always a good starting point for building bonds, I’ve found).  A colorful and playful look at Irish heritage, pick up a copy of I is Ireland – available in hardcover for $17.95 at Carmichael’s – and join Pidgeon for a reading and signing in celebration of my favorite namesake.  Erin Go Bragh!

Carmichael’s Bookstore has two area locations: 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Avenue.  For more information about Viki Pidgeon and I is Ireland, visit the event page or call the Frankfort Avenue store at (502)896-6950.

    About Erin Day

I'm a Louisville native who transplanted home from Las Vegas recently. Don't ask. In my spare time I read a lot of books and drink gin. My soulmate is my 1994 turquoise Ford Ranger - they never made a finer truck. I still totally believe in the Loch Ness Monster. I just want to write for you.
