With the end of the world only a mere 290 days away (ask any self-respecting Mayan), the idea of the “dystopian society” or “post-apocalyptic wasteland” is a topic that is perhaps bearing its first weight on the hearts and minds of the Earth’s citizens. Ahhh…sweet existentialism. We are all familiar with the classic dystopian novel – Brave New World and 1984 being at the forefront of this pack, but Fahrenheit 451 being the best of all three – and perhaps some of us have even dallied with more obscure (The Wanting Seed) and more recent (The Road) contributions to a life re-imagined after various and sundry monumental catastrophes. Young adult fiction is no stranger to unpleasant alternate realities either; with buzz rising about the popular series, The Hunger Games, dystopia is hot on the zeitgeist – and, thus, author Kristen Simmons is right on target for her debut novel, Article 5.
A former Louisvillian now launching her first book, Kristen Simmons brings her work of young adult fiction home this coming Thursday, March 8th at – where else – Carmichael’s Bookstore. Simmons, holding a master’s degree in social work and currently working as an advocate for mental health, enters the writing world with the teen thriller, Article 5. Set in an uncertain future America where the Bill of Rights has been revoked and the streets are prowled by soldiers, seventeen-year-old heroine, Ember Miller, unfolds a story of intrigue in the wake of a devastating arrest in this first installment of a planned trilogy.
Beginning at 7pm at Carmichaels’ Frankfort Avenue location, Simmons will read selections from Article 5 and pen signatures. Available for sale now at Carmichael’s in hardcover for $17.99 and via Google eBook for $9.99 (pffff….), pick up a copy of Article 5, indulge the turmoil of your inner teen and take the plunge into the great dystopian unknown.
