Like so many others, I spent my derby with boobs, booty, and booze. However, I probably saw a lot more skilled and artistic delivery of them. The lively full house was an interesting mix at the Burly Picks burlesque competition at Art Sanctuary Saturday. Vendors sold sparkly sexy things, jewelry, and masks as a host of costumed characters from Blue Moon Circus strolled around the warehouse venue and a projected video of sexy dancing graced the stage until things got underway. It got a late start, but that didn't seem to upset anyone. As the audience sat sipping booze and ogling the characters around them, cross dressing nuns (known as the Derby City Sisters) made their way through the audience spreading smiles and diversity as everyone waited for the girls to spread themselves on the stage.
I'm not sure I agree with the winner, although she was pretty tremendous. St. Louis performer Foxy Lafeelion will be representing Kentucky in the finals. I'm just biased and would have liked to see a Louisvillian go.
This regional qualifying round was a long night of copious amounts of alcohol, booty shaking, and tassel twirling. The acts ranged in talent from brand spanking new to polished and trained. A multitude of acts passed before the judges, with multiple appearances from some of the performers, but Va Va Vixen Dita Da' Ville did a great job keeping things on the move as the emcee. (Judges were Marvis Lee Mae, Shawna the Dead, and Monet Magnolia)
There were some notable moments, and I'm going to do my best share them despite poor memory and wine haze. Five hours worth of wine can definitely lead to a cheeky blur of memory. I definitely remember there were boobs.
If you'd like to appreciate the beauty of women's body's, talents and humor in a classier manner than Derby mudpits, be sure to visit the next fully theatrical Va Va Vixen's show in June. More information can be found at their web site.
