    Bit to Do

How I spent my Derby with boobs, booty, and booze
    Print this page

Like so many others, I spent my derby with boobs, booty, and booze.  However, I probably saw a lot more skilled and artistic delivery of them.  The lively full house was an interesting mix at the Burly Picks burlesque competition at Art Sanctuary Saturday. Vendors sold sparkly sexy things, jewelry, and masks as a host of costumed characters from Blue Moon Circus strolled around the warehouse venue and a projected video of sexy dancing graced the stage until things got underway. It got a late start, but that didn't seem to upset anyone. As the audience sat sipping booze and ogling the characters around them, cross dressing nuns (known as the Derby City Sisters) made their way through the audience spreading smiles and diversity as everyone waited for the girls to spread themselves on the stage.

I'm not sure I agree with the winner, although she was pretty tremendous. St. Louis performer Foxy Lafeelion will be representing Kentucky in the finals. I'm just biased and would have liked to see a Louisvillian go.

This regional qualifying round was a long night of copious amounts of alcohol, booty shaking, and tassel twirling. The acts ranged in talent from brand spanking new to polished and trained. A multitude of acts passed before the judges, with multiple appearances from some of the performers, but Va Va Vixen Dita Da' Ville did a great job keeping things on the move as the emcee.   (Judges were Marvis Lee Mae, Shawna the Dead, and Monet Magnolia)

There were some notable moments, and I'm going to do my best share them despite poor memory and wine haze. Five hours worth of wine can definitely lead to a cheeky blur of memory. I definitely remember there were boobs.

I was impressed with the storytelling skills of Mason Doodle who told tales as he fit and contorted his body through three tennis rackets.

Träshique D'Lamour won a medal in the booty shaking/twerking/twirling contest, although the audience screamed and howled pretty equally for her and Siobhan Atomica (pronounced Chevon). Constance Morewood (from Tennessee) won the tassel twirling medal.

Siobhan Atomica is tremendously talented, trained and nailed facial expressions throughout her routine. Her costumes are amazing, and I hear she makes them all herself. I thought she had the whole thing wrapped up.

I did so love Trashique's hobo clown routine.

I really loved Freya west, who also took things outside "classical dance" and portrayed a rock and roll shaman that reminded me of the movie "heavy metal". She's got those curves and curly blonde hair that make men beg.

I am also surprised that Va Va Vixen's Victoria did not win. She has such a playful, cute and innocent joy that radiates from her; she danced and then performed on the aerial cube, ending upside down in the lotus position.

If you'd like to appreciate the beauty of women's body's, talents and humor in a classier manner than Derby mudpits, be sure to visit the next fully theatrical Va Va Vixen's show in June. More information can be found at their web site.
