So you've heard that compost is nature's way of recycling, right? Some perks of spreading a bit out in the yard include enriching your soil better than chemical fertilizers are capable of doing, downsizing the amount of waste you send off to the landfill, making the ground retain more water, and lessening erosion.
This weekend you have the opportunity to learn how to flip organic waste into plant food. On March 26 Breaking New Grounds--a composting nonprofit with the intent to "provide practiccal training programs designed to teach sustainable urban farming practices"--will combine forces with Amazing Green Planet--a green lifestyle store--to offer two free composting workshops.
The workshop will be led by Breaking New Grounds board member Mark Forman, and it takes place at 11 a.m. at Amazing Green Planet located at Westport Village, 1301 Herr Lane. The purpose of the workshops is to educate participants about the composting process and the simplicity of building soil--even smack dab in the middle of the city!
Besides offering the free composting workshops, Amazing Green Planet will sell Life's Magic, a rich compost cultivated by Breaking New Grounds. Breaking New Grounds makes LIfe's Magic compost by allowing red worms to chow down on Heine Brother's Coffee grounds, spent grain from Brown-Forman and local food waste--churning the mixture into ideal fertilizer for the yard or garden. From an Life's Magic compost bought on March 13th or 14th Amazing Green Planet will donate 20 percent of sales made to Breaking New Grounds for acquirement of composting equipment.
