    Bit to Do

Like riding your bike in the Highlands in the fall? Who doesn’t? Get on your bike and cycle away to the first annual Tour de Francis bike ride this Saturday, October 30.

Registration will be taken for the race, which begins at 1:00 p.m., starting at 11:00 a.m. and continue until about 12:30. Riders are required to wear helmets.

According to coordinator Lou Lindsey, there will be two rides: a 35-mile route featuring rolling hills throughout the metro area, and a flatter, shorter 13-16-mile “cruiser” ride for those under 17 or anyone who wants a shorter trip. Explains Lindsey, “The 16-miler is through the park, then we’ll cut over to the river walk at Lexington and Grinstead, then route everyone as far as we can to the McAlpine Locks, then circle back.” The longer ride will continue to approximately Lime Kiln Lane, through the locks and back.

The entry fee—$30 for adults, $15 for those under 17 and those doing the shorter ride—includes a SFA “Tour de Francis” t-shirt and a meal afterward. “We’re going to grill some wings and brats and some pasta salad,” Lindsey says, “and there’ll be beverages and cold beer.”

The rain-or-shine event begins and ends at the St. Francis parking lot in back of 1960 Bardstown Road in the Highlands. Says Lindsey, “We’re going to try to do it every year. There’s a big group of us that rides on weekends, usually 10 or 15 of us, we wanted to get people involved and have some fun.”

Proceeds will go toward offsetting the St. Francis operating budget. For more information, contact Lou Lindsey at 905-0142 or
