    Bit to Do

    Friday Bourbon News Roundup

The Filson Bourbon Salon at Oxmoor tickets are on sale.  The event will take place August 14 at 5:30 at the gorgeous Oxmoor Farm in the library.  The topic will be Bourbon Families, but if you still need motivation:

In related Filson Bourbon Academy news, Bourbon Historian Mike Veach finally got a cell phone, and with it a Twitter account.  Go follow him here: @BourbonVeach.

Heaven Hill announced Wednesday that they will continue to release the small batch Elijah Craig 12 year as long as supply and demand both allow.  The last release of 2014 will hit stores in September.  Click here for more information.

One of my favorite whiskey bloggers in Louisville, Sipp’n Corn, wrote a lovely piece about the old Mellwood Distillery in Louisville.  The writer is a lawyer by profession, so his blog posts generally have to do with whiskey-related lawsuits.  This particular post highlights how this distillery shaped the Louisville we all know and love but would have been lost from history if not for a lawsuit.

Whiskey lovers across America were incensed to read the news that their favorite “craft rye” was probably made in a factory in Indiana.  It’s worth noting that Janet Patton of the Lexington Herald-Leader explained this issue back in December 2013 in this piece I’ve quoted dozens of times by now in social media.  Whiskey is a commodity industry, and it would be nice if rectifiers would label their products as such.  There aren’t rules to govern this practice currently.  Read more about it from Chuck Cowdery here.

Things to do this weekend and beyond:

Check out the new Speakeasy tour at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience.

Buy your tickets to the upcoming Whisky Chicks Bourbon Fundraiser, happening August 8.

Check out the Bonded Bourbon and Bluegrass Jam with Hickory Vaught at Haymarket August 3.
