The Filson Bourbon Academy is quickly becoming a powerhouse in the bourbon world, both locally and nationally. If you’ve taken a look at their lineup lately, you know they are going to be out of town more than they are going to be in town this summer. This is great because they are spreading the love and knowledge of bourbon across the land. But it’s also sad because the chances to catch this group in Louisville are becoming fewer and farther between.
I had the good fortune of attending the first of their new series, Filson’s Bourbon Salon at Oxmoor Farm: Part 1 – Bourbon History and Travel. Driving up to the historic home on Oxmoor Farm is, in itself, a breathtaking experience. Several people commented throughout the evening they had lived here all their lives and had never known this beautiful home was there.
The event was held in the library of the Oxmoor estate, which is the third largest public library in the United States. The panel consisted of four local bourbon writers- Fred Minnick, Susan Reigler, Mike Veach, and Chet Zoeller. Each writer picked a special bourbon to share with the group, and stories about that bourbon and how it relates to the bigger picture were related to the audience.
It was a very casual environment with lots of time for questions. One of the great things about events like this is they draw a wide variety of bourbon lovers- everyone from those just starting on their bourbon journey to the seasoned bourbon professionals. Bourbon is a very friendly community- people who work in the industry are accessible and always happy to talk.
The next Filson Bourbon Salon will be held in July at the same location, and even though the date hasn’t been announced it is already close to full. If you want in on this special event, call the Filson right now. This is guaranteed to be a fun and informative evening.
