If you haven’t been to The Filson Historical Society lately, you’re missing out. They recently embarked on a major expansion effort that will greatly increase the space they will have for events and exhibits. That means there will likely be more and bigger bourbon events with Mike Veach and The Filson Bourbon Academy.
Currently, The Filson Bourbon Academy is held twice a year in Louisville, but when I went for a visit last week they hinted that it could expand in the future due to the great demand for bourbon education in Louisville. They are even expanding this event to other cities and states, from Lexington, Kentucky to Portland, Oregon. They are also doing other events beside their signature all-day bourbon and history education course. I recently attended the first of the Filson Bourbon Salon at Oxmoor Farm, which was a wonderful and relaxed way to learn about bourbon in a room full of people who ranged from bourbon newbies to bourbon experts. The discussion was informal and each panel member chose a specific bourbon to talk about from an historical perspective.
The topic of the next Filson Bourbon Salon at Oxmoor Farm will be craft distilling and experimental products. This is sure to be a lively discussion, as most bourbon geeks have strong feelings about experimental products. Included on the panel will be Stephen Beam from Limestone Branch and Bren Goodin from Boundary Oak.
