One of my all-time favorite travel memories is sitting at an outdoor café in the town square of medieval Bruges, Belgium on an unseasonably hot day, enjoying a local brew while the carillon played Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, “Ode to Joy.” Although I can’t guarantee you the same ambience, you can satisfy at least a couple of your senses during Flanagan's Belgian Beer Week.

Belgian Beer Week, which starts this Thursday, June 24, promises to take all the regular beers off tap. In its stead will be an assortment of Belgian and Belgian-style beverages specially ordered for the occasion, on tap and in bottles. Order a Lindeman’s Peche at 7:00 p.m. or Saison Dupont at 8:00 and keep the glass—or fill up with my husband’s and my personal favorite, Bruge Zot (see picture), available in Dubbel. Other varieties available throughout the week include raspberry-scented Oud Beersel Framboise Lambic, Abbaye des Rocs Tripel (produced in the shadow of a ruined monastery), Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge from Flanders and the dubbel-style Cuvee Angilique—and scores more.

Flanagan’s Ale House is located at 934 Baxter Ave. in the Highlands. For more information, call 585-3700.
