In the laundry list of bands coming and going through Louisville’s indie music scene, it’s sometimes hard to find a standout. Everyone has an electronic beat to toss you, or a suburban kid trying hard to be a hip-hop star, but sometimes something jumps out and catches your attention. If you’re looking for a stand-out act, mark your calendar for October twentieth at Zanzabar, because is in town all the way from Minneapolis.
Bringing a style they call “tripnotic,” Enemy Planes fuses solid statically-pulsing rhythms with complex, multi-layer vocals and a set of instrumental talent that crosses a wide spectrum of sound. Their latest single is utterly surreal, with a sound that creates an almost unbalancing level of fascination, and with coupled with the music video an almost dissonant level of storytelling that complements the music while unsettling the viewer.
Even their website is evocative of the electric-psychedelic feeling that permeates their music. Anemone-like lights grow in the background of the page you’re on, continuing to multiply and fill the screen, drowning out all the background colors. Like their music, it’s consuming and it draws you in - in a way, it takes over the background. If you’re sitting at home hoping to get some work done while listening to Enemy Planes in the background, you’re not going to accomplish much. This is the kind of music that forces you to listen, even when it seems to fade into other sounds.
In their first visit to Louisville, Enemy Planes will be joined by local acts Citizens United featuring emcee 1200 and Black Birds of Paradise. It promises to be an evening of incredible music, so don’t miss out. Doors open at 8PM for this 21-and-over show, with a five dollar cover charge.
