Friday morning, patrons of The Café at 712 Brent St. could enjoy a two-course breakfast for $25 per person while perusing hats, dresses and accessories for Kentucky Oaks and Derby 139 at the inaugural Derby Hat Fashion Breakfast. Half of every $25 spent benefited the Victoria’s Hope Fund, a fund established to provide support for The Eating Disorders Coalition of Kentuckiana through the Norton Healthcare Foundation. The fund was named after Victoria Petersen, a hostess at The Café who succumbed to complications from her long battle with bulimia in August of 2010 at the age of 27.
Guests had the opportunity to view and purchase pieces from local boutiques The Hanger, Revelry Boutique Gallery, and The Hat Girls. Fascinators, handmade jewelry, and Derby-inspired items were just some of what was available between 7 and 11 a.m. Amanda Hinds, owner of The Hanger, informed Louisville.com that turnout was picking up in the last two hours than when she arrived to set up shop prior to sunrise. Hinds also introduced yours truly to The Hat Girls, a new boutique specializing in custom headwear for all special occasions alongside “the fastest two minutes in sports.”
As for the breakfast itself, those who paid the $25 enjoyed a two-course menu, starting with cranberry-orange scones, and wild blueberry and morning muffins. Guests then had a number of options to consider for the second course, ranging from baked oatmeal and twice-baked French toast, to southern grits scramble and Strata al Cucina. Juice, coffee, tea, milk and soda was also available to compliment the food served.
