"Oh my goodness, I didn't expect this in Louisville." There are things you expect when you come to Louisville. You expect fast horses, incredible bourbon, an iconic baseball bat and beautiful women. What surprised my friend Jim from Cleveland, who uttered the opening statement, was great sushi!
Of all the things you know about Louisville, know this! Louisville restaurants rock!
In this QUICK BITES post, I'll give you three things you must eat this Breeder's Cup weekend! And, I am focusing on downtown since the majority of the out of town guests will be staying there.
Breakfast Bite: The Sweet Potato Cinnamon Roll at The Cafe, 725 Brent Street - just off Broadway downtown. This soft, warm combination of delicious sweet potato and spicy cinnamon make you think of sweet potato pie in a breakfast roll served with hand made cream cheese icing.
BONUS: you can visit iconic Louisville Stoneware, just across Brent Street, after breakfast but before the track.
Surprise Bite: Sushi, yes Sushi, kicks ass in Louisville. And one sushi roll specifically, the Thanksgiving Roll at Caviar, 416 W Muhammad Ali Blvd. Yes, it is a sushi roll. No, it doesn't taste like turkey and dressing. It tastes like Thanksgiving! It's the damnedest thing. Inside the roll, it has smoked salmon, crab and cream cheese. Outside the roll, you’ll find avocado, kanpyo (Japanese pickled) with ginger dressing and shredded carrots. It's my single favorite sushi roll!
BONUS: Stroll around the corner on 5th street and behold one of Louisville’s oldest and most beautiful cathedrals, The Cathedral of the Assumption
Decadent Bite: The Lobster Mac and Cheese at Eddie Merlot's, corner of 4th and Ali! This gooey, cheesy macaroni and light, perfectly cooked lobster is comfort food gone Hollywood! You will find this dish contains mascarpone, cream cheese, Pepper Jack, Gruyère, and shredded Cheddar Cheeses. It is a deliciously indulgent way to celebrate after wining a few races at Churchill Downs.
BONUS: After dinner head to 4th Street Live and continue the celebration by dancing the night away at any one of the clubs.
