Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest will host a number of events next Saturday, January 15th in their visitor’s center. Pack up the family and head out to the rolling hills and sustainable beauty that is Bernheim next weekend to participate in one of the many educational events that bring nature to the foreground. As always, members are free, non-members pay $5 per car at the entrance.

• ECO Kids Discovery Days: Naked Trees-- Bernheim’s Every Child Outside (ECO Kids) initiative this month will focus on the “naked” tree, leafless and all-exposed in the winter months. While we ogle at the foliage in spring-fall, families will compare winter’s “naked” tree structures through the “On-Your-Own-Challenge” (available in the Visitor’s Center from 9:00-5:00) and at various “Discovery Stations” (in the Visitor’s Center from 1:00-4:00).   

• Lithic Art Show and Rock Swap-- From 10:00-3:00 in the Visitor’s Center, according to the Bernheim event calendar, rock lovers will be able to, “Observe flint knappers and artists from the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. demonstrate the art of chipping flint into arrowheads, spears, knives and other ancient tools and weapons. Modern replicas, pre-historic artifacts, and other primitive arts and crafts will be displayed and offered for sale.”

• The Art of Sustainable Beekeeping-- If bee-keeping gets you buzzed, then sign up for naturalist, Mac Howard’s workshop on alternative approaches that keep the chemicals out of standardized bee keeping techniques. Inspired by Michael Bush, this worksop costs $15 for members and $20 for non-members (advanced registration is required) and runs from 9-12:00.

• Smart Gardens and Landscapes-- I know we’re all dreaming of spring gardening now, but Bernheim is officially gearing up our gardening plans with their new series on smart gardening practices. January’s session is on composting and will cover a “quick and dirty” overview of the science behind composting and teach a host of tips to get you ready for spring. In the second half of the workshop, you will construct a compost bin in the Research Center. The workshop is $10 for members, $15 for non-members and runs from 10-2:00. Advanced registration is required.
