Seasoned performers, and faithful followers of Beatles music, The Apple Core took a break from life in the nation’s capital over the holiday weekend. Since the summer of 2009, The Apple Core takes the music very seriously, using period correct instruments to precisely recreate the sounds of The Beatles, as John, Paul, George, and Ringo would, beyond 1966, the year the tour stopped.
Andrew Ratliff (vocals, percussion), Mark Lindamood (drums, vocals), Eric Schlam (guitars/keys/vocals), Mike Dutton (bass/vocals), and Mark Owens (guitar/vocals) arrived in Louisville and went out into the crowds after a near 10 hour drive from D.C. Three sets in two days began with a 3 pm showing at the Fountain Saturday and ended with a late afternoon set on the Lawn Stage, Sunday. The two outdoor shows took place in hot, sun-filled arenas, with concert goers looking to stake claim to the best shaded viewing areas. The one indoor performance took place on the New Stage, inside the Galt House Hotel; providing much deserved air-conditioning for both the band mates and fans.
The first show at the Fountain provided the straight sounds of The Beatles, with not a note out of place. Drummer, Mark Lindamood commented following the set, “We play it straight; that’s what we do”, in conversation. Near 100 degree heat proved tiring for most of the bands at the annual festival, yet The Apple Core did not allow the heat to interfere with their playing, both on stage and off. The attention to the music is always at the forefront of the band’s performances, routinely inviting the audience to sing, dance, and enjoy the sounds of the music that influences generations, still today.
Now, safely back in the District of Columbia, The Apple Core is set to play the DC version of Abbey Road on the River, taking place over the Labor Day weekend. With the first visit to the ‘Ville in the books, The Apple Core is planning a return trip next Memorial Day weekend to Abbey Road on the River.
