In addition to the pink worn by NFL players on Sunday afternoon, Louisville showed solidarity with breast cancer awareness Sunday in the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.
The event’s chief goal was to raise money and awareness towards defeating the all too prevalent cancer. Beginning at 1:00 Sunday afternoon at Waterfront Park the walk proved a massive success for all involved.
Gaining financial support from local and national companies as well as private donors the walk brought in thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, an organization which provides aid, support, and assistance all over the country. In addition the organization donates more funds towards finding a cure for the disease than any other non-government group. This has led the American Cancer Society to be a major players in nearly advancement made in defeating this cancer. More than that though, the ACS aids in the development of cures for all cancers.
Sunday’s walk brought people out from all over the area, many of whom were survivors or were directly involved with somebody who dealt with breast cancer themselves. And, when the statistics say that less than one in eight of all women in the United States will deal with some form of the cancer at some point in their life, this is sadly far too common.
However, with the grass roots efforts of events like the one held on Sunday the amount of deaths from the disease has steadily been decreasing. Today, according to ACS statistics two and a half million women in the U.S. are survivors.
Walks for the cause are being held all over the country backed by the ACS, for instance during Louisville’s walk, Lexington was having one of their own. Earlier in the month the walk came through Ashland and Owensboro in the bluegrass state alone.
