On Wednesday, October 21, 2015, Yelp is bringing their second installment of Yelp’s Art in Action back to Louisville! Last year's event was attended by 400+ people, and there were various restaurants and businesses participating along with DJs, spray paint artists, and circus performers. This year, Yelp is hosting Art in Action with a different theme, and anticipating an even larger turnout.
The event will be at The Gillespie (421 W. Market St.) from 7 - 10 p.m. The entire event- food, drinks, and entertainment- will be completely free! Everyone who wants to come must be 21+ and has to RSVP on Yelp with a Yelp account. Emily Hagedorn, Yelp's Louisville Senior Community Manager, emphasized that anyone who’s interested in attending the event needs to RSVP as soon as possible, as reservations will close at 10 a.m. the day of or whenever 500-600 reservations are reached. Everyone who registers for the event afterwards will be put on a wait list. There are no walk-ins the day of, and attendees are to bring their QR code (that they’ll receive via email) to check in.
Hagedorn stated that this event strives to celebrate the creativity of Louisville through food, drinks, visual arts, music, and more. There will be over 50 businesses present, providing samples of their products, eye-catching attractions, and creative interactions. For example, Hagedorn mentioned that Gallery K will have a live art area, Sweets by Millie will be featuring a giant cake for participants to decorate, and 240sweet will host a s'mores bar! In regards to performances, there will be a singer from the Kentucky Opera as well as hair shows from Focus Salon. One of the big attractions of the night will be Leah Halston, a drag performer from Play Louisville. Halston will set up her vanity area by the stage so people can interact and talk to her while she’s getting into drag. Halston will be the closing performance of the night onstage.
A great aspect of this event is the fact that people will meet businesses face-to-face and will walk away with a better understanding of them. Hagedorn explained that Yelp loves to highlight businesses, both local favorites and up-and-coming locations, to give people more “knowledge to check out new businesses.” Yelp does not make any money off of this event; organizations are allowed to participate for free, and the event really connects the community with the goings-on of the city.
There will be a suggested $10 donation at the door of this event for Yelp’s non-profit sponsor, the Fair Event Vendors Alliance (FEVA). This group connects the LGBT community with wedding and event professionals as well as other businesses in Louisville who are emphasize equality and fair treatment. Yelp is seeking to make this event as unique as possible for every year that it's hosted! Hagedorn emphasized that they hope that this event will be different than any other in Louisville with the goals of connecting the people with local businesses and organizations as well as imparting a better understanding of Yelp and what they do.
