    Bit to Do

Looking for a little exploration this summer? Take a stroll over the Big Four Bridge to Jeffersonville, IN and embark on a scavenger hunt to find all 10 of the city's new Monumental Memories Photo Mural installations. Jeffersonville Main Street Inc. brought this project to life after countless hours of hard work and support from the community as well as from Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Association, the Jeffersonville Public Arts Commission, Indiana Main Street and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

All 10 murals will remain in place for one to two years before a new set of images are installed. The photographic murals are hung on different buildings throughout Downtown Jeffersonville, each in black and white and enlarged up to 10’x12’. They are taken from historic photographs of Jeffersonville that various individuals have contributed to the project.

Each of these beautiful murals draws its audience in to catch a glimpse of “what was” versus “what is.” Each mural is a blast from the past, showcasing how Jeffersonville has changed over the years. Many, if not most, of the shops shown in the murals are now gone and have been replaced by current businesses.

Jay Ellis, Executive Director of Jeffersonville Main Street Inc., explains that these murals “will blend the attributes of public art, placemaking, and history [to create] another wonderful reason to visit Downtown Jeffersonville.” Through a combination of newfound creativity and love for the historic qualities of the city, they are working to revitalize Jeffersonville and these murals are only one of the many initiatives they have taken.

More information on this project along with a map of each mural’s location can be found here. This is a perfect outing for friends and family, and to make it a little harder, try finding each site without the map. Here’s a hint: most can be found up and down Spring Street, in the heart of Downtown Jeffersonville.
