As the crowd really began to grow Friday evening at Apocalypse Brew Works on the first day of Poorcastle, Violet Knives set up to play their last set ever.
Some people in the crowd had no idea, but some traveled to the event just to see them.
A local band ending their run isn't necessarily earth-shattering for the community, but it is immensely personal for the four guys in the band who have poured their effort into their craft and their hearts into the band - four guys who will remain friends after their last show.
It only took one song for singer and guitarist Shawn Steele to tell the crowd that he was having some unexpected nervous energy. If he was nervous, Poorcastle couldn’t tell. Violet Knives made great work of their 40-minute set, even including a New Order cover.
So why break up if the music is still feels good? According to Violet Knives bassist Eric Condon, things for the band weren’t getting any easier - putting together shows was difficult. “Nobody incubates talent in Louisville. You either blow up or you simmer” Condon said. Guitarist Ty Goodwin said that, while the band still had new material to play, breaking up the band didn't feel premature. Goodwin said they aren’t in debt, nor is there any infighting.
A short set at Poorcastle is an uncommon choice for a band’s final show, but the guys said it just felt right. They had already booked Poorcast;e when they called it quits, and wanted to keep this show as their last. Vocalist and guitarist Shawn Steele said many people involved at Poorcastle were some of their strongest supporters including festival organizers and band Tall Squares.
