Welcome to Thunder Over Louisville's Thunder Road!
“Thunder Road” will have everyone in downtown reliving the excitement and fun of exploring new destinations and experiences through road trips and traveling across the globe. It is conjunction with the overall 2009 Kentucky Derby theme of “Road To Fun!”
As in years’ past, this year’s Thunder will start with the Air Show at 3 pm. Guests will be introduced to and dazzled by aeronautical stunts and tricks, technology and acrobatics by the United States Navy, Army & Marines pilots. There will be more than 60 civilian and military aircrafts flying throughout the afternoon, energizing the crowd in preparation for the nation’s most spectacular fireworks show!
Headlining the event, the fireworks show will begin at approximately 9:30 PM. The 30-minute show is the largest pyrotechnic display in North America, and it promises to pack a punch again this year!
As always, viewing Thunder is free to everyone and is viewable from both sides of the river. Parking can be found in any of the area parking garages, or ride the Tarc bus to avoid traffic. You can be best prepared by doing some homework and being diligent about planning, such as checking the weather report and road closings beforehand.
Some tips for making thunder a little easier:
If you choose to drive, remember to park as far away as possible to make exiting downtown a little easier. Bring/wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking a long distance throughout the day. The weather varies greatly from year to year, so be sure to check local news to see if you’ll need a jacket or warm clothes, sunscreen or sunglasses as the evening goes on.
Don’t bring in any tents, pets, firearms, alcohol, cans or bottles, or skateboards and bicycles. You’ll be able to purchase food, drinks and alcohol at the event.
You can bring blankets, chairs and rain gear, plastic bottles and food. If you’re not sure- leave it at home or you may lose it! And, the number one thing to bring to Thunder: Patience. You may find long bathroom lines, food and drink lines, and most certainly- traffic. Remember that everyone wants the same things you do- have a good time, stay comfortable and make it home safely!
