Number One: For Jumpers, Wigglers, Folks Who Love to Sing Along, Too

Bet you didn’t think the first dance event in this list was going to be at the library. But it is: Music and Movement with Maria Whitley will be held Saturday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Matthews branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.

From the event description: “The whole family will enjoy jumping, wiggling and dancing to familiar and not-so-familiar but super-catchy sing-a-long songs. Play with egg shakers and other instruments. And of course, discover how much fun singing is with a favorite book! Ages: birth-7. Please call to register at 574-1771.”

Did you know the Louisville Ballet School offers opportunities for we non-professionals to learn and practice ballet – and other forms of movement, too?

A great way to try out different classes to see what you like best, and to be assured of high-quality instructors, is to take part in the Adult Open Division classes. For ages 15 and up, these classes are offered at convenient times. Once you register, you can take any classes you like, purchasing classes one at a time, or attending with a multi-class card.

This weekend, for example, Saturday, June 22, Adult Advanced Ballet is offered 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the downtown studios and Adult/Teen Beginning Ballet is offered from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the St. Matthews studios. Check the schedule for hip hop, tap, yoga and more.

Number Three: For Those with a High Appreciation for Passion, Drama and Costumes

If you’ve been lucky enough to see Flamenco Louisville perform, and wondered how the dancers learned their craft, you’re about to find out. The group offers a wide array of workshops and classes, in addition to regular performances.

This Sunday, June 23, is a perfect time to give it a try. From 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. the QuickStart Intro to Flamenco Dance will be held. It’s a one-time workshop that’ll give you a taste of the dance movements, the music and the culture of flamenco. Love it and you can sign up for a set of classes.

A transplanted Hawkeye, I've now lived in Louisville longer than any other city. Can't live without: my husband and fur babies, coal-black coffee, peanut M&Ms, sunflowers, monthly vacations, books, walking paths, massage and a big purse.
