Walking around the University of Louisville’s Ulmer Stadium, one is met with one of the most modern softball stadiums in the region.

For twelve years now the stadium’s state of the art accommodations including a climate controlled press box, field lighting, and architecturally developed dugouts has provided a comfortable home for women’s NCAA softball.

Specifically UofL, who started taking the field in 2000 for both practice and home games, almost immediately after building was completed.

And, soon enough tournament committees began to take note of the stadium, as the Conference USA softball tournament held two championships in the stadium, one in 2001 and another in 2004. It should be noted that this was when the Cards still inhabited this conference prior to making the jump to the Big East.

However, the Cards new conference almost instantly saw why the stadium housed two conference championships in the past successfully, and, as such held their annual tournament for four back to back years in between 2008 and 2011.

However, the ballpark doesn’t just serve the Cards acting as a highly sought after softball field for high school games as well as various camps and the like in the area.

Make no mistake about it though; this park translates to the Cards, as the stadium is the only one that the University’s softball team has really called home as the team’s inaugural season was in 2000.

And, with the knowledge of having one of the best softball stadiums in the country the team has won two conference championships, produced an all-American, and made two NCAA tournament appearances.

The simple fact about this ball park is that it’s really in its infancy and it’s very clear to see that there are big things in store for it, so I guess all that’s left to say is, “play ball.”

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
