It’s no secret that the city of the Louisville Slugger is synonymous with the game of baseball. And, so it only makes sense that the University of Louisville baseball team has had a storied history.

Beginning in 1909 the team has made three NCAA tournament appearances, one college World Series appearance, grabbed four conference championships, and has produced fifty pros.

In the many years of UofL baseball the team has called many ballparks home including Parkway Field and Derby City field to name a few. Still, the men that took those fields would more than likely be awestruck to see where the current Cards club calls home, Jim Patterson stadium.

Since 2005, the stadium named after former Louisville ball player and donator, Jim Patterson has welcomed all comers.

More often than not, a free ball game can be seen throughout the summer months when the perennial powerhouse Cards do battle with conference and non-conference competitors alike.

In addition the stadium has seen super regional games; most notably Louisville taking on Oklahoma State in 2007 this proved a national opening of sorts as the three game series was broadcast nationally on ESPN.

In addition NCAA tournament games have been played at the park, in 2009 and 2010 during regional sections of the tournament, and in 2010 when, in addition to the regional the park held its first post regional games.

The park itself is an impressive stadium, with seating for 2,500, it offers a major league quality field, highly technological based lighting, press boxes as well as a number of other modern baseball conveniences.

By the way, if you were curious the park had its highest attendance of 4,605 spectators May 29, 2009 during an NCAA regional game against Indiana.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
