When it comes to area high school football it seems two schools often dominate conversation: Trinity and St. Xavier. The rivalry between these two is one of the most prestigious in not just local high schools but around the country as well. As such, it often comes as little surprise that when looking at local colleges’ football teams both of those high schools are represented in their rosters. This is particularly seen with the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky, both of whom have offered spots to a number of St. X and Trinity grads.
We turn our attention now to St. X, who produced All-State Full Back Joe Tronzo in 2005. Tronzo went on to be included in the All-District Team and played in the Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star game. In addition, the standout received the Johnny Unitas Student Athlete award and proved his strength by winning the USAPL National Power lifting Championship four times.
In addition to his football related pursuits Tronzo currently holds the state record for shot put.
His high school football career culminated in 2004 though, when he was named the team captain of a pigskin club that won the state championship that year.
With such an impressive resume he quickly earned a spot with the University of Louisville out of high school. A science major in college Tronzo quickly made a name for himself with the Cards. Known as a hard hitter and even harder worker Tronzo saw substantial playing time for his full four years of college.
Following college Tronzo was pulled off the professional free agent wire when he went to play with the Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals.
Recently Tronzo was hired as a color commentator for University of Louisville football games- he will be working with Paul Rodgers on WHAS radio.
