I'll never forget the first time a boy bought me chocolates: he was just a friend, but he brought a little pink square box of chocolates to school for me on Valentine's Day. I was immediately smitten. While sampling the low quality drug store chocolate stuffed with electric orange “nougat” and coconut “Creame” I became less smitten. What kind of a guy only springs for cheap chocolate? That's like buying Walmart lingerie—it might look the same, but it sure doesn't feel the same.

You don't have to break the bank to treat your loved one to some high quality, hand made Ghyslain chocolate. The Ghyslain chocolatiers have released a special Valentine's Day collection ranging in price from about $12 to $57.50. Some special chocolates in these collections: caramel roses with caramelized pecans, fleur de sel caramel hearts with toasted macadamias, and chili pepper filled chocolate hearts. You can get a hand painted chocolate box with chocolates inside it—that's like Valentine's day squared! Chocolate to the power of chocolate! Imagine handing your date a big fat chocolate heart with more artisan chocolates inside!

You could also choose from Ghyslain's regular chocolates and candies, which are variously marvelous. There are adorable chocolate turtles, Tahitian vanilla medallions, raspberry chambord truffles covered in white chocolate and filled with raspberry puree, white chocolate ganache and chambord extract, you can even get a chocolate piano or high heeled shoe to cater to your loved one specifically.

Ghyslain has locations at 721 East Market St. at the heart of NuLu, and 1215 Herr Lane in Westport Village but you can also order from their website. Happy Valentine's Day!
