    Bit to Do

One of the first 4th of July's my family and I lived in Louisville we got to celebrate it the "old-fashioned way" courtesy of the Crescent Hill Old-Fashioned 4th of July Art & Musical Festival. Live folk music played as I walked with my family and new friends, weaving in and out of the art fair where I bought homemade soaps, cold-pressed olive oil, and a hand-made wooden dog on a string, which my son pulled behind him through the grass.

We watched music on the Main Stage from a seat on the porch of the historic Peterson-Dumensnil House, eating American staples like hot dogs covered in spicy mustard and pickled relish, and cheeseburgers covered in grilled onions and crisp dill pickle chips, with a cold beer to wash it all down. The day of celebrating ended the only way it should: with the pop and crackle of brightly colored fireworks filling the night sky.

This year the two-day celebration is happening again in the Crescent Hill neighborhood on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5 at the Peterson-Dumesnil House (301 S. Peterson Ave.--between Frankfort Ave. and Grinstead Dr.) from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Live music will include bluegrass, country, folk, Dixieland jazz, Celtic, and more. The art fair will be open 10 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (or later) both days with over 80 artists displaying their original and handcrafted works including jewelry, sculpture, painting, watercolors and much more. Live musical performances will be on the Main Stage each evening, as well.

It's extremely family friendly with children's field games, a children's activity area with inflatables, competitions, and face painting. There will also be a prize wheel, indoor silent auction and Crescent Hill Historical Displays. The popular Pet Show and Contest is Saturday at 11 am. There will be an outdoor food court and Frankfort Avenue Business Association runs a beer tent, as well.

For your convenience there will be a trolley service on area streets and from the free parking at the Southern Baptist Seminary Parking Lot on Grinstead Avenue. Here is a detailed schedule of events for the weekend.

If you haven't made plans yet this really is one of the best ways to spend your 4th of July weekend here in Louisville.

    Hope y'all have a Happy 4th!
