Would you like to see your artwork displayed prominently? So prominently that absolutely nobody in the area could possibly miss it?
A unique community effort is combining a contest with just such an opportunity.
Vision Louisville, Louisville Metro Government and the SoBro Neighborhood Association are working together to present the SoBro ArtWalks Contest. (SoBro is South of Broadway.)
Between now and August 22, artwork entries are being accepted, and four winning entries will be painted into the crosswalks at four 4th Street intersections: Broadway, York, Breckinridge and Kentucky.
The crosswalk artwork idea has been tried in other cities, both legally and illegally. Louisville organizers want to bring what they have observed there to our home city. Other similar efforts have:
Fostered local neighborhood identity
Increased pedestrian safety
Calmed traffic
And of course, the artwork has made area streets more unique and attractive.
The goal of the contest is to “promote and energize the Fourth Street Corridor.” Applications should be designed for one or more specific intersections, and the applicants will need to explain their vision for using community volunteers to apply the design to the crosswalk.
