    Bit to Do

June is fast approaching, Louisville! This means springtime is moving out and the heat of summer is moving in. Before you know it, the kids will be out of school and the whole family will be hunting for fun and safe ways to spend free time. So why not get a head start on the fun of summertime while you take the day off on Monday and observe Memorial Day at Slugger Field!

This Memorial Day, the folks at Slugger Field are teaming up with Humana to recognize the true meaning of the holiday in an extra special way. For a limited time starting on May 25th, you can pay your respects to the thousands of men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War while witnessing the 46-by-8-foot mobile replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which will be located in Slugger Field’s Hall of Fame Pavilion.

This mobile replica, which has been named “Bringing Home the Wall,” was created by Tom and Dee Twigg to offer a new type of experience to those unable to travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the actual Vietnam Veterans Memorial. “Bringing Home the Wall” is scheduled to tour to different locations across America this year, and it just so happens it’s spending Memorial Day with us. What better way to honor America’s soldiers, past and current, on this holiday than observing such an exciting monument!

But the traveling replica isn’t all Slugger Field has to offer this Memorial Day weekend. Along with a performance by the 113th Army Band before the Bats baseball game against the Toledo Mud Hens, Slugger Field will be paying their respects to those lost in the Vietnam War with a very special POW/MIA Chair of Honor dedication ceremony. This Chair of Honor will be located permanently in Section 130 of the stadium.

The Chair of Honor dedication ceremony will begin at 3:30pm on Memorial Day, followed by the baseball game beginning at 4:05pm. “Bringing Home the Wall” will be open for viewing on Monday, May 25th from 3pm – 7pm, and then from 10am – 9pm on Tuesday, May 26th and Wednesday, May 27th.  Tickets to the Memorial Day game are free for veterans, active military, and military family members.
