At just after 1 p.m. Metrosafe confirmed there had been a shooting at Fern Creek High School. Officers dispatched to the scene found one victim with non life-threatening injuries. There was one shooter who fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Police officials said late this afternoon that they had apprehended a suspect in the shooting, but released no other details.
After the shooting, students were ushered out of the school and into a nearby athletic field.
Jefferson County Public School officials said parents should pick kids up from Fern Creek Park behind the school, taking Bardstown Road as other routes are blocked. Parents should note that they will need identification to pick up their child. Parents were advised to access the park from Bardstown Road to Ferndale Road. The parent(s) and the victim have been united.
Earlier today, police were still searching for the alleged suspect, who they described as a 15-16 year old black male, 6'5'' wearing a gray hoodie. He was believed to be armed and on foot.
This is the second (known) school shooting of the day in the United States. The first happened this morning at Albermarle High School in North Carolina.
In 2008, a student at Fern Creek High School was charged with possession of a hand gun on school property. In 2011, Fern Creek High School was put on lockdown after reports of a gun in school. In 2012, two guns and a knife were found on Fern Creek High School's campus.
