Mr. Doug Elmore brings over twenty-five years of quality musical experience to Floyd Central High School and Highland Hills Middle Schools’ Orchestra Programs in the Louisville-Southern Indiana area. With a an undergraduate degree in Music from DePauw University (1986) and a Master’s Degree from the University of Louisville School of Music(2001), Mr. Elmore has led the Floyd Central and HHMS Orchestras to more than seventy Superior (Gold) ratings at ISSMA Music Festivals over the past twenty-two years. In addition, the Floyd Central High School Orchestra has performed at each of the last twenty-one ISSMA State Finals Contests, earning State Champion Honors in 1995 and Runner-up Honors in 1996 and 1998. He served on the faculty of Bellarmine University as Jazz Bass instructor, and is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Louisville School of Music, where he teaches String Methods.
As a performer, Mr. Elmore is an very active jazz bassist in the Louisville scene, having worked with Bobby Johnson, the Jazz Prophets, Music Theatre of Louisville, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Dick Sisto Trio, the Ron Jones Quartet, the Ron Hayden Trio, the Platters, Delfeayo Marsalis, the Jerry Tolson Quartet, the Mike Tracy Trio, the Robert Nickerson Band, the Sara Stivers Quartet, and the Carly Johnson trio . He can be spotted on weekends performing at the historic French Lick Hotel. He has studied jazz improvisation with Mike Tracy (U of L), David Baker ( Indiana Univ. ), Randy Salman ( DePauw Univ. ), Rufus Reid and Lynn Seaton (both of the Jamey Abersold Jazz Workshops).
In 1998 he was awarded an Eli Lilly Endowment “Teacher Creativity Fellowship” grant, which he used to research and write the composition “Megan’s Musing”, a jazz piece for high school orchestra. In 2003, he founded and wrote arrangements for “Celtic Fire”, a new string group playing a mix of jazz, bluegrass, and popular music. They were selected as the “Distinguished Ensemble” at the 2005 University of Louisville Jazz Festival . In 2008, Mr. Elmore was honored by receiving the WHAS "ExCel" Award, a recognition given to outstanding teachers in the Louisville Metropolitan area.
Emily Poe Stumler is an attorney in New Albany practicing Real Estate, Family, and Estate Planning Law at Hoffer Law, LLC located on Spring Street. She is a graduate of Floyd Central High School, Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a University of Tennessee College of Law. Emily is an accomplished fiddle player, previously touring as a fiddle player and back-up singer with country artist Taylor Swift. While with Swift, she opened for acts such as Tim McGraw, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and was featured on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Live! With Regis and Kelly, CMA Music Festival and the CMA Award Show. She has also performed with Trisha Yearwood, songwriter Jamie Floyd, Jack Ingram, Tyler Hilton, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, and a variety of other Nashville artists. Emily got her start playing in fiddle contests just like this one and is proud to judge the 2012 Fiddle Fest!
Competitors will be expected to perform three songs by memory including a hoedown, waltz, and song of choice. Contestants may play without accompaniment or with not more than three accompanists. The contestant must lead at all times; accompanists may not play the melody. For more details on rules or how the contest works contact Anna Blanton.
