Acting Against Cancer is at it again.

The theatre company, formerly known as Kids Acting Against Cancer, has grown up. And they are bringing the grown-up production of RENT to the stage this week.

The musical, which first hit Broadway stages to critical acclaim, brought a new slant to the American musical genre, with rock music and comments on current events - most notably the HIV/AIDS crisis.

RENT is based on the opera La Boheme, and includes musical touch points such as “Seasons of Love” and “La Vie Boheme.” It won four Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical in its debut year. The musical spawned a spinoff movie in 2005, starring Taye Diggs, Anthony Rapp, and Adam Pascal.

The production is the first theatrical performance to take place at the new Tim Faulkner Gallery, located in the Portland neighborhood. Since opening its new space earlier this year, the gallery has been host to several art shows and live music performances.

Acting Against Cancer will continue to carry out their mission of donating 100% of the show’s proceeds to purchase specifically needed items for the oncology unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital. Since its inception in 1999, Acting Against Cancer has donated over $350,000.

RENT opens Friday, June 6 and runs through June 15, with a half-price Industry Night on Monday, June 9. Tickets are $18 for general admission and $12 for onstage seating. They may be purchased online or at the door.

The Tim Faulkner Gallery is located at 1512 Portland Avenue. When using GPS for directions to the theatre, the address 1529 Lytle Street is recommended.
