Be they dogs, cats, snakes, birds or turtles, our pets bring out the best in us—and when they’re gone, their unconditional love is never forgotten. With this in mind, the International Association of Pet Cemeteries (IAPC) has designated the second Sunday in September as National Pet Memorial Day, and many pet cemeteries observe this day with special ceremonies. In Louisville, a candlelight vigil, Honoring the Animals, will take place this coming Saturday, Sept. 12 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in the Highlands.
The event has grown considerably since its founding in 2007, and this year's guest of honor is Diane Gaidry, best known for her appearances on the CBS drama
Medium
with Patricia Arquette. Gaidry also won the Grand Jury Award for Best Actress at 2006’s Outfest LGBT film festival for her role in the independent production
Loving Annabelle
.
In addition to the memorial, the event will include poetry and musical selections by members of the Louisville Orchestra. An interfaith Blessing of the Animals will also highlight the evening.
St. Andrew's is at 2233 Woodbourne Ave. Honoring the Animals is presented by Chance's Spot Pet Loss and Support Resources, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that assists pet caregivers and professionals with pet loss and grief.
