The cast of the Louisville production of
Hedwig & the Angry Inch
will appear at Ear X-tacy this evening for a special in-store performance. The 1998 glam rock musical (which later became a movie starring writer/director John Cameron Mitchell in the title role) tells the story of Hansel, an East German teen with musical dreams who falls in love with an American soldier, who promises to marry him if only he undergoes a sex change operation. The operation doesn’t go quite right, however, and “Hedwig” is left with the, uh, angry inch of the title—and abandoned by her husband in America. To add insult to injury to insult, Hedwig is further betrayed by her new boyfriend Tommy, who steals her songs and becomes a David Bowie-type superstar while Hedwig is left scraping by in bars around the Midwest with her band, The Angry Inch. But Hedwig still loves Tommy, and through her own electrifying performances, tells her tale and tries to get him back.
Sound good? The San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival agreed, awarding Mitchell’s film the award for Best Feature in 2001, and the movie took home two major awards at Sundance. You can see some of that live energy for yourself starting at 7 p.m. sharp, then catch the full play at The Alley Theatre, 1205 E. Washington St., through next weekend. Scott Anthony stars as Hedwig, with Mike Brooks directing.
