Headliner’s Music Hall housed a packed show for The Almost and Relient K this weekend.

Relient K played a well-rounded mix of old songs including my favorites “Mood Ring,” “In Love With The ‘80s,” and “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been.” They also played songs off their new album including one I particularly enjoyed named “Don’t Blink.” Relient K hasn’t lost their original sound even though they have mellowed with age. Consequently, Relient K’s lead singer, Matt Thiessen, has certainly aged since I began listening to Relient K ten years ago; however, I’m not sure what I expected to happen. I’ve seen Relient K three times over the course of ten years, and every time they’ve played a fun and entertaining show.

The Almost played before Relient K. I’ve only listened to their first album, but they put on a great show for hardcore fans and casual listeners alike. They did a great job of keeping the crowd entertained and involved. As Aaron Gillespie, lead singer, described when I interviewed him, The Almost’s music is plain and simple rock and roll with a hint of screamo.

Driver Friendly was supposed to perform as the show opener, but the Rocket Boys played instead. They’re a solid group with excellent vocals, and their music sounds like Mumford and Sons with more rock and roll.

I was unable to get very many good pictures because the security guard would not allow me near the front even though I had a media badge. Headliner’s is what you would expect for a concert hall that regularly houses bands popular among angst-ridden teenagers. Headliner’s saving grace comes in the form of their friendly bartending staff, and you might need a drink if there are hipster couples making out around you.

All-in-all, I had a good time reliving my youth Friday night, but I’m certainly glad I don’t go to too many “standing room only” concerts anymore.
