Derby week means there is a a lot going on in Louisville, the music scene included. There are several free events, as well as some big name sell outs, all gearing the city up for our biggest day of the year. For location, time and cost, click on the link for each event. Check back at livemusiclou.com after the events for our full reviews.

    Monday (4/27)-

    Kentucky Derby Fest-a-Ville

Kick off Louisville’s biggest week of the year with a free Kentucky Derby Fest-a-Ville gig. This concert will show lots of local love, with A Lion Named Roar, who has some new music to share with us, and Lazy Sunday on the bill. And, it's HappyTail Hour, so bring your dog down to the Waterfront!

    Wednesday (4/29)-

    Kentucky Derby Fest-a-Ville

Wednesday is another big day for the Fest-a-Ville, with the historic Great Steamboat Race, as well as Beer Fest. The KDF show includes Genevieve, formally of indie rock band Company of Thieves. Her new venture as a solo artist has been quite successful, with the highly-contagious “Colors” single getting lot of radio play. Another free WFPK-sponsored Wednesday event? We’ll be there.

    Thursday (4/30)-

Thurby at Churchill Downs featuring Kyle James Hauser and Zach Longoria Project

Thurby at the track is quickly becoming the locals' choice day for Derby week festivities. With Kyle James Hauser’s unique brand of folk and the smooth sounds of ZLP, it should be a great day at the Downs before all your weekend visitors arrive.

    Ryan Adams with Jenny Lewis

This one has been sold out for a while, but if there is anyway you can get tickets, Ryan Adams and Jenny Lewis will certainly put on a fantastic show. The two have been traveling together for a long stretch, with their mutual respect and meshing styles driving this epic tour.

Four Roses Derby Party featuring G. Love

Do502 and Indianapolis’ Do317 present this groovy evening at the Mercury Ballroom. A Four Roses Derby party with G. Love sounds like a gem to us.

    Friday (5/1)-

JJ Grey & Mofro, Anderson East, Louisville Leopard Percussionists

JJ Grey & Mofro will be at the Iroquois Amphitheater for some post-Oaks day jamming. Their latest album Ol’ Glory, covers all the good stuff including blues, gospel and rock. There may not be a better way to get your southern-side prepped for the big day.

Do502’s Derby Eve with Murder by Death, Morning Teleportation, and Twin Limb

There are lots of Derby Eve parties going on around town, but we really appreciate the free ones. This show features a band from just up the road in Bloomington, Murder by Death, as well as Bowling Green’s Morning Teleportation and local trio Twin Limb. The online RSVP list is huge, so expect this show to be a winner.

If these Derby week events aren't your style, no worries, there are tons more out there!
