Louisville is a city which loves its artists. Anybody can make a name for themselves here, given they have the passion, the talent, and the drive to get their work in the public eye. Next month Churchill Downs will host the Bluegrass Arts Experience, during which the race track’s infield will be full of artists, musicians, and writers, among others.
We, however, are concerned with the most exciting part of the festival: the Bluegrass Film Experience 7 Day Challenge, wherein teams of filmmakers are tasked with completing a 5-10 minute short film within a week.
The challenge starts on Friday, May 11, when participating teams are given a genre, a line of dialogue, a character, and a prop, all of which must be incorporated into the film. No preparation (beyond forming cast and crew) is allowed to occur before the start time – all writing, shooting, editing, etc. must be done during the week.
All completed films will be screened during the Bluegrass Arts Experience on May 26 and May 27, and an awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 28.
Registration for teams is currently ongoing. Early bird registration takes place until April 30, and the registration fee during this time is $100. Normal registration runs until May 11, and the registration fee until then is $150 – so it pays to register early. Also: only forty teams will be allowed to participate. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis, so it would behoove interested parties to sign up early.
