Louisville is a city that loves its film festivals. We have the Jewish Film Festival, Fright Night, the LGBT Film Festival, the Bellewood Youth Film Festival, and Flyover, to name a few. We also have the Derby City Film Festival, now in its fourth year, which has just released its film selections and schedule for the upcoming program.
The mission of the Derby City Film Festival is to bring independent cinema to the people of Louisville: “Focusing on independent films and filmmakers rather than celebrities and hype, the DCFF sets out to prove that quality films do not have multi-million dollar budgets. Credit card advances, family loans,
selling plasma, doing whatever it takes to get your dream and vision to the big screen are the types of films and filmmakers we showcase. Those are true independent films.”
This year’s festival showcases 56 films (including shorts, feature-length films, and documentaries) from around the world and the country. This will be the world premiere for eight of these films, as well as the U.S. premiere for five of them and the Kentucky premiere for twenty-eight.
It is also important to the festival organizers to include local talent in the festival. Eight of the films to be shown were produced right here in Kentucky, and five others have ties to our state.
Workshops and panels will also be held throughout the festival, but further information on these will not be released until mid-January.
The Derby City Film Festival takes place at the Clifton Center in February, from Friday the 17th
to Sunday the 19th. Individual film tickets cost $7.00, and day passes are also available: $12.00 for Friday, $30.00 for Saturday, and $20.00 for Sunday. A pass for the entire festival can be purchased for $50.00.
