    Bit to Do

Last week, I took the Healthy Hometown’s Facebook post to heart. I called them and requested some free bike helmets that they were giving out to the public. By the end of the following day from their initial offer, they reported that they had already given out all of the smalls and extra-large! But I got my hands on two large and one medium that I hope our family will make great use of this summer. Thankful that I didn’t have to spend more than the two dimes and a nickel that I dropped into a parking meter on E. Gray Street, I was elated that my family was one of the few who could take part in this invitation.

It got me thinking about what other types of health-related programs that the Metro Health Department has to offer. So I set off on some research one day of their Health and Wellness website and found out some fantastic programming exists! Diabetes has really hit home to my family recently, and when one of the first slides I saw across the screen on the Metro Louisville Government website for Health and Wellness was about a free diabetes class starting, it immediately caught my eye and I wanted to plug in further. Here is a sampling of what I discovered.

    • Free diabetes classes presented by Public Health and Wellness
      • Four week session begins Tuesday, July 9 at Westport Road Church of Christ; call 574-6663 for more information and to register
    • Healthy Hometown offers “Walk with a Doc” program at various parks
      • Parklands of Floyds Fork – 10am on 2nd Saturday of each month
      • Iroquois Park – 10am on 3rd Saturday of each month
      • Shawnee Park – 10am on 4th Saturday of each month
    • A variety of exercise and fitness classes are offered weekly. Click here to see the complete schedule. Here are some examples:
      • Aerobics at Portland Family Healthy Center, Mondays 5pm-6pm
      • Track Tuesday! At Waggener High School, Tuesdays 7pm
      • Yoga classes at Portland Family Healthy Center, Sundays 6:15pm-7:15pm
      • Walking Wednesdays at Crescent Hill Gatehouse and Reservoir, 11am-1pm & 6pm-8pm
      • Kroger Health and Wellness Fair, Saturday, June 29 from 10am-2pm
      • Free guided hike at Waverly Park, Saturday, June 29, 8am

Take the initiative for yourself and/or your entire family to get on the right track with health, fitness, and nutrition. Attend one of these free classes or the countless others that Metro Health Department organizes monthly. Take it slow and gradually ease into more vigorous family activities. Start with simple family walks at a local park and start frequenting your local farmer’s market for healthier choices. My family and I are working on beginning bike riding together, and we’re excited because when you do something together, somehow it just makes it easier and more fun!

Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness Department is located at 400 E. Gray Street; call 502-574-6520 for inquiries and more information.
