Enjoy a little Shakespeare, comedy, or history during the University of Louisville theatre department's 2011-2012 season.
During the season, U of L will present six shows for the mainstage: Richard III (October), The Flu Season (November), Mad at Miles: A Black Woman's Guide to Truth (Nov.-Dec.), Blues for an Alabama Sky (February 2012), Atomic Bombers (Feb.-Mar. 2012), and a to be determined play (April 2012).
Season tickets are available for purchase, $60 for adults, $50 for seniors 65 years old and over, and $40 for students. Season tickets can be purchased at the U of L box office or via a form located on the U of L theatre arts department website.
All performances will happen on the U of L campus, either at the Thrust Theatre (2314 South Floyd Street in the Studio Arts Building) or the Playhouse (1911 South 3rd Street, the white building on the corner).
U of L starts the season with the Shakespeare-created tragedy Richard III, which deals with the central character's rise and drop into paranoia and corruption. Richard III will be at the Thrust Theatre from Oct. 5-9. Rinda Frye will direct the production.
The dark comedy The Flu Season will follow, featuring oddball patients and their oddball caregivers. A love story somehow occurs among the mayhem. James Tompkins will direct the production, which runs at the Thrust Theatre from Nov. 16-20.
From the African American Theatre Program comes Mad at Miles: A Black Woman's Guide to Truth. Pearl Cleage's work centers on the issues of love, happiness, suffering, and domestic abuse. Lundeana Thomas will direct the production, which is to run at Thrust Theatre from Nov. 30-Dec. 4.
AATP will also present Blues for an Alabama Sky, the first production of 2012 for U of L. Another Cleage-created work, the story focuses on friennds who try to make dreams come true despite the pressures of living in Harlem during the Great Depression. The Nefertiti Burton-directed work will take place in the Thrust Theatre from Feb. 1-5.
Atomic Bombers, meanwhile, will feature a race of atomic proportions between scientists and Nazis to create the atomic bomb. Russell Vandenbroucke will direct the production, which will be performed at the Thrust Theatre from Feb. 28-March 4.
