Because nothing says "What the hell am I doing?" like getting up really early on a cold winter's day and running through Cherokee Park like a raving lunatic, River City Races will be sponsoring the Polar Bear Grand Prix Racing series.

Designed to encourage people to get out and run, the three races are the perfect way to challenge your body without the added pressure of something unfortunate slipping out of the bottom of those too-short running shorts, an all too common occurrence during the warmer months.

The first race in the series, the Reindeer Romp 4k (which is Canadian for 2.4 miles), will be held this Saturday, December 10th, at 9:00 a.m. at Hogan's Fountain in Cherokee Park.  The Frostbite 5k will be on January 7th, at 9:00 a.m. at the Rugby Field in Cherokee Park. The final race, the Snowman Shuffle 4 Mile, will be held February 4th at 9:00 a.m. at Hogan's Fountain in Cherokee Park.

Online registration will close at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on December 7, 2011 (only $60 for all three if you register by this deadline!).  For those interested runners who miss the deadline, you can still sign up on December 8th and 9th by visiting Fleet Feet Sports at 2239 Taylorsville Rd. between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. or the day of the race at Hogan's Fountain from 8:00 a.m. until 8:45 a.m.

To sign up online or for more information about the Polar Bear Grand Prix, click here.  To sign up for just the Reindeer Romp 4k, click here.

Participants are required to bring a new, unwrapped toy or apparel OR a $10 donation when picking up their registration packets, with all donations going to the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

When I was a boy, I met Darth Vader at Raceland Mall. I also got to hug a Jawa. I have spent everyday since then chasing that high.
