The Volume 15 PechaKucha Louisville event is scheduled, and it’s a great theme: Food for Thought.
“Over the last 14 PechaKucha events that we have held,” says organizer Patrick Piuma, “some are themed and some are wide open as far as topics. With all of the buzz, both local and national, around the food scene in Louisville, the announcement of the West Louisville FoodPort, and one of Louisville’s economic drivers being food and beverage, we wanted to provide an event that celebrated food.”
April 14, at the Tim Faulkner Gallery, doors open at 7:00 p.m., presentations start at 8:00 p.m., and attendees will enjoy a cash bar. The event is free, but donations are accepted to support the series.
So, what should you expect from PechaKucha?
“PechaKucha (pronounced peh-chak-cha) events are held in over 800 cities now. The format provides a great social engagement atmosphere where people’s passions and ideas can be presented in an entertaining as well as educational way,” says Piuma. “Each speaker has 20 slides, each slide lasts 20 seconds and automatically advances, so each speaker has six minutes and forty seconds to talk. It seems daunting at first, but the format actually helps organize thoughts into a very succinct manner.”
The pace is rapid; as each speaker finishes, the next one begins their presentation immediately.
Eight to 12 speakers are planned for Food for Thought, all ”people involved in the food system in some form or fashion in Louisville.” The organizers try not to proscribe too tightly what presenters offer within the theme of the event. “The hope is that people will walk away with a deeper knowledge about what is going on in our city and be inspired by some of the ideas and passion that drives the speakers to do what they do,” says Piuma.
An exciting list of confirmed presenters for Food for Thought includes Chef Edward Lee, Chef Gina Stipo, Bourbon Barrel Foods President Matt Jamie, Cellar Door Chocolates Founder Erika Chavez-Graziano and food writer Ashlee Clark Thompson, plus many more.
