Book clubs are not just for nerds. While often relegated to a class of high school kids stereotyped for pocket-protectors and awkward social skills, book clubs can be a catalyst for both good friendships and lively discussion. Analyzing literature (or popular fiction) need not be dull or tedious; a well-rounded book club offers its members a chance to swap perspectives and gain insight into the deeper meanings behind the words. Enter the politician – minus the politics. Mayor Greg Fischer steps out of the office and will launch his own book club in conjunction with the Louisville Free Public Library; the first meeting convenes this Wednesday, September 21st at the Library's Main branch, downtown.
Scheduled to gather on the third Wednesday of every month, The Mayor’s Book Club will select titles from the Library’s Read Your Way Around the World Book List, beginning with Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. A New York Times bestseller, Cutting for Stone tells the story of twin brothers born of a secret union between an Indian nun and a British surgeon. Orphaned by the death of their mother and abandoned by their father, the brothers come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Written by an Ethiopian physician forced to leave his homeland behind during political unrest, Cutting for Stone is a deeply personal tale of both love and loss.
Check out your own copy, soak it up and prepare to voice opinions. The Mayor’s Book Club will meet from 12pm – 1pm starting this Wednesday. The Man himself hopes to stop by occasionally, and his wife, Alex Gerassimides, will be amongst the regular attendees. Bring your lunch and spend an hour outside the cubicle; satisfy your inner bookworm and challenge yourself as a reader. Nerds unite!
