    Bit to Do

Words are universal.  No matter the language, no matter the alphabet, all cultures have a deep and personal voice; there will always be stories to share.  Travel the globe from your favorite reading chair this month and hear those tales; celebrate September 2011 with the Louisville Free Public Library during International Month.

The Read Your Way Around the World program will feature a myriad of global-themed festivities with all branches participating in the month-long celebration.  Each branch will showcase a different country and present events and programming highlighting the unique roots and culture of that nation.  Activities will include children’s story times, book discussions, food-and-culture events and many other types of merriment sure to expand your worldview.

Strengthen your literary palette and make a selection from the Read Your Way Around the World Book List – comprising some 50 titles from dozens of internationally acclaimed authors.  Find something for every age and interest with genres including fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, young adult, and children’s books.  My personal recommendations from this list are fictional gems of great prose such as Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (or pretty much anything that flows from his pen) and Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie (also a genius).

Festivities begin tomorrow, September 1st and continue daily at different branches around the city; click here for a full calendar of all international events planned for this month.  The Iroquois (Iraq), Portland (Cuba), and Southwest (Japan) branches will host the first activities, including an Iraqi film festival, Cuban cooking, and an all-day Sudoku challenge.  The Main branch will launch its first event on Sunday, September 4th with Lots of Pasta!

Drop by, read up and ignore boundary-lines; make no hesitations to explore the limits of our world.  Books are culture!

    About Erin Day

I'm a Louisville native who transplanted home from Las Vegas recently. Don't ask. In my spare time I read a lot of books and drink gin. My soulmate is my 1994 turquoise Ford Ranger - they never made a finer truck. I still totally believe in the Loch Ness Monster. I just want to write for you.
