“OMG where did you get that bag?” This is what you will be hearing from every woman who approaches you to ask about your Inherited Leather purse by Sue Schofield. Where can you find said purse? You’re in luck. Kaviar Forge & Gallery’s newest holiday exhibit is featuring the work of several local leather artists in order to showcase the art of finely crafted leather goods in Kentucky: masks, jewelry, hats, baskets, belts, purses, and of course saddles will all be made available to purchase.
The idea behind the exhibition is to show leather with craftsmanship so fine that it is a work of art in itself, in addition to leather used as a medium for artistic expression. The type of leather used by participating artists varies from the more common cattle and horsehide to the exotic stingray hide to kangaroo hide, the strongest leather. Braided leather will be on display as well: these intricate techniques are mostly historical and are rooted in sailor’s knots and Argentine designs. Additionally, the gallery will play Telly-Award winning how-to videos by leather artist Robert Black about knotting and braiding.
Artists include Sue Schofield of Inherited Leather, Steven Hughes of Pillywiggins Leather Etc, Robert Black of Marlinspike Knot Works, Janet Strait and Megan Sturgeon of Swash-Bucklers, Walt Priddy, Johnny Sosbe, and Craig Kaviar. The exhibition will run until January 17th, but get on the F.A.T. Friday/Black Friday Trolley Nov. 25th to start shopping for the season.
Kaviar Gallery Hours: Thursday – Friday 12 to 6 PM and Saturday 12 to 4 PM or by appointment. Kaviar Forge & Gallery is located at 718 Frankfort Avenue.
