I am not the kind of gal that you'd usually find trudging amongst rows of livestock and other animals of various sizes and shapes. Yet, that is just where I wound up thanks to my spouse who grew up on a farm and whom wanted me to relive vicariously his memories of youth and the 4H Club. It was there, amid the fur and the feathers that I met a rather inspiring young man by the name of Remington Ingram. He's 14 with a long history (honestly) of farming & raising animals with all of the hardwork that that entails. (You know, the long hours starting at the crack of dawn, the back breaking labor of gathering eggs, mucking stalls, working in fields..not to mention school.) All of this by choice and for pleasure! His fowl had just won Grand Champion Asiatic Large Fowl, Reserve Champion Mediteranian & Grand Champion Large Foul, the latter award being over all large poultry.

Getting to chat with Remington reminded me of all of the reasons to buy local and how important it is that we support the producers of our local agriculture and produce. That's part of what the State Fair is all about & it's why I think everyone should check it out. Get to know the people responsible for the majority of our ability to eat. Remington's already started his own business providing eggs for several major stores like Krogers and IGA, as well as working with Ivor Chodkowski, who makes fresh omelettes at the Bardstown Farmers Market on Saturdays.

The Kentucky State Fair doesn't end until Sunday, August 29th, so take some time to go check it out.
